Wrap and Turn (W&T): Short Rows

Wrap & Turn (W&T) is used for garment shaping. It is one technique used to turn the heel of a sock. It is also frequently used in three-dimensional knitting such as knitting animals. W&T shapes an animals head and body.

Step-by-step instructions

Note: The instructions leave two stitches on each edge.

1. (Right side of work). Knit to the last three stitches. Slip the next stitch to the right needle WITHOUT KNITTING it. Bring the yarn to the front of the work. Wrap the yarn to the back. Slip the yarn back to the left needle. 2. Turn the work to the wrong side. Purl until three stitches remain.

3. Slip the next stitch to the right needle WITHOUT knitting.

4. Wrap the yarn around the stitch. (You're bringing the yarn to the right side of the work.) Turn the work and knit to one stitch before the wrapped stitch. Repeat Steps 1-4 until 4 (or the desired number) of stitches remain. End with a purl row.
PICKING UP THE STITCHES.
5. Knit across the row until you come to the first wrapped stitch.
6. Pick up the bar (the wrap) with your left needle. The stitch with the wrap has NOT BEEN KNIT.
7a. Move the bar to the right needle. (This step is optional.) 7b. Transfer the stitches to the left needle.
8. Knit the two stitches, and turn the work. Slip the first stitch. (This will produce a tighter join.). Purl to the wrapped stitch. 9. Pick of the bar below th purl stitch with your left needle.
10a. Place the bar on the right needle. (Again this step is optional -- it's just easier with the extra step.)

10 b. Transfer the two stitches to the left needle and purl. (The purled stitch is on the right needle. The left needle has not yet released the two stitches.)

Turn the work and repeat Steps 5 through 10b until all of the wrapped stitches have be worked.

All wrap and turns have been finished. Proceed by knitting and purling full rows.
