GraFting (Kitchener) Stitch

Grafting is a finishing technique that is often used to complete garments such as mittens, socks, or gloves. This technique uses a darning needle to join two pieces knitted pieces, for example, the front and back of a mitten, glove finger, or sock. The result is an invisible join that resembles a row of knitting.

Step-by-step instructions

Note: Normally grafting begins with the strand of yarn from the top needle. In this example, a contrasting color is used to highlight the grafted row. Since this yarn is not attached to the top needle, the first stitch is not fully "knit."
1. NOTE: The START HERE instructions show where the yarn will be located at the start of grafting.
Thread this yarn through a needle. Insert the needle through the lower knitting needle as if to knit. The arrow show the direction of the darning needle.
2. Pull the stitch of of the knitting needle.
(When using the yarn from the upper needle, this will form the first half of a knit stitch.)

3. Insert the darning needle into the stitch in the lower knitting needle as if to purl. The direction of the darning needle is shown. DO NOT REMOVE the stitch from the needle. 4. Insert the darning needle into the stitch in the upper knitting needle as if to purl.

5. Slip the stitch off of the upper knitting needle.

6. Insert the darning needle into the stitch on the upper knitting needle as if to knit. DO NOT REMOVE the stitch.
Repeat Steps 1-6 across. Step 1 is illustrated again. The grafted pieces.
