The Knit Stitch

The knit stitch is the most basic and easiest of the knitting stitches. It is typically the first stitch that a beginning knitter learns. If the beginner learns to knit with two needles, the result is called flat knitting. When all of the stitches have been transferred from the left needle to the right needle (for right handed knitters) a row has been completed. When only the knit stitch is used in flat knitting, the pattern produced is the garter stitch.

Step-by-step instructions

(These instructions assume that the knitter is right-handed. Left-handed knitters will probably want to reverse the directions.)

The placement of the yarn is emphasized in the pictures rather than the placement of the right hand.

1. Place the needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Your right hand holds the initially empty needle. With your right hand, insert the empty needle into the first stitch on the full needle. The two needles should be facing the same direction.

2. With your right hand, take the strand of yarn and place it between the two needles. The yarn is held at the back of the work. You will be moving the strand from below to above. The left needle is in the background; the right is in the foreground.

3. Use the right needle to pull the strand of yarn through the stitch on the left needle.

4. Pull the right needle away from the left needle. Make sure that the stitch is not too tight (or you won't be able to knit the next row.) If it is too tight, pull the right needle further away from the left needle while loosening your grip on the strand of yarn. Repeat Steps 1-4 across the row.
